Penang Trip

19th September 2019

Day 1

Project 2 needs us to explore and find fading culture in Penang. Around 5pm we arrived Penang Container Hotel.

It is kind of capsule hotel, every single one of us sleep inside one box.
It is quite a very good experience.

We went to a art street that very near our hotel, and see some art works that sell there. There some clothes, drawing and others.

There is a hidden cafe inside the art street, the interior design of the cafe is very simple, but it is very comfortable, it is very perfect for people to relax here and stay away from the noises.

We visited the Sekeping Victoria as well. The design concept is same with Sekeping Serendah, they used many old stuff to turned it become decoration or useful instead of keeping it.

And we also went to the Little India. I saw they sell many the flower there and the floral hoop. I  considered the floral hoop as one of my inspiration.

We went to hawker centre to have our dinner, these are what we ordered.

At night, we also went to have some fun. Then finished our first night.

Day 2

In the morning, we woke up quite early, at 7am. After we prepared then we went to Roti Canai at the Transfer Road. This is called Roti Banjir, is the Roti Canai mixes with curry chicken. The curry flavour is very strong, it is super delicious.

After the breakfast, lecturer planned a walkabout tour, we went some places to explore more about the culture and history of Penang.

The tour guide brought us to go to a Chinese temple, she told us a lot of history and story about the Chinese culture.

We went to Indian temple and walk around. I found out many amazing hand carving work has done in the temple. But inside of the temple is not allow to take picture, so we just took a look of inside.

And mosque. But it is not open to public, so we only could see the exterior at the opposite of the road.

After the walkabout tour, me, celeste and siliviena went to a rattan shop to find some inspiration.
The owner of the shop uses rattan and bamboo made many fantastic things for sell.

We also found a seal shop. The owner told us about how he works the seal, and he said this work needs a lot of patient. Also the owner said not many people would like to learn seal script.

So I considered this as my inspiration for my project 2.

Right after that, we went to a fulfil of art drawing cafe, Narrow Marrow.

these are the fan that we bought from the rattan shop.

with beautiful weaving pattern.

In the cafe, we asked the owner where could we find the traditional Chinese lantern making shop, and  he asked us why we looked for those traditional thing, we said we studied Interior Architecture, and the owner said he also graduated from Architecture in Tasmania. And I also found out that many traditional houses in Penang are hanging Chinese Lantern outside of their houses. Also, not many people will do it nowadays
So I considered it also could be one of the inspiration.
And I asked the owner of the cafe, he said last of the lantern making master passed away, so could not find any shop in Penang.

And the owner also very kind and friendly to tell us we could go to thrift shop and find some inspiration. He recommended us to go to "Grandfather's barang-barang".
We saw many really old stuff.
Like old radio that still playing fm

and some old suitcases

some cute old matches from the hotel

after that we went to the Blue Mansion, the old house of Cheong Hatt Tze.

The interior of the house mixed with Chinese and Western style.
We can see it from the floor, ceiling, window and the others.

The tour guide of the Blue Mansion said all those tiles are imported from Europe. Even though it is built long time ago, it still in good condition.

And the windows are inspired by western.

This is the largest courtyard of the house

After the Blue Mansion, we have done our day 2 trip.
